Meet the 2024 Officers!

-
I have served on the board for the past two years and I feel ready and empowered to take a larger leadership position, due to the activeness and invigoration I have shown on the current board. I feel like the job is not finished and there is so much more to do, personally, and as a chapter to lay a good foundation for our future.
-
Besides being on the current NOMAColumbus board, I had participated in a national youth service and leadership organization called Top Teens of America for 5 years from 2009-2014 and held a vice president position in the Indianapolis chapter for 2 years. I was 1 of 24 students to attend a national leadership conference in Houston, TX in 2012 for TTA where I learned organizational skills and parliamentary skills alongside national board members. I was an active member in AIAS at Southern Illinois University from 2014-2018 including their freedom by design committee that focused on design for those with disabilities. For NOMAColumbus, I have served as the planning committee chair since the fall of 2021, running the planning for all chapter events and activities to date, including the chapter's 1st year anniversary party, our first independent community booth at Juneteenth on the Ave, organizing two chapter volunteering opportunities and the 2023 community fundraiser. The 2023 events have had a combined revenue of almost $1,200. I developed, operated and have published 16 consecutive monthly newsletters since May 2021, and I have operated the website since May 2023.
-
I have broad experience with working with community groups, charitable events, and fundraising, including working with clients and doing design/build projects for a good cause. I take pride in my ability to understand operating procedures and push the envelope of what a group can do.
-
I see a high potential for NOMAColumbus to begin carving a path of advocacy through volunteering, professional guidance, and giving back. The wealth of resources from our members is boundless and there needs to be a space that we can provide for the underappreciated work from professionals and unheard ideas and needs of the city's residents. NOMAColumbus deserves a seat at the table when it comes to the Columbus design community, and the current discourse between the built environment and underrepresented populations. NOMAColumbus exists as a bridge over the current gap between the design community and urban communities of color, and we can begin to provide resources, education and insights into how our profession can adequately serve those underrepresented groups.
-
With AIAS Freedom by design, we were building an accessible ramp for a service dog training facility and we needed to find an affordable way to enclose their training space. My team helped to source wooden pallets around campus and other local scrap yards, transport them to the site, design and build a fence with them. With NOMAColumbus, I did the research and troubleshooting through many programs and iterations to get our listserv and newsletter to what it is today.
-
My goals for the chapter include growing the membership by at least 20 members, gaining at least $25k in chapter sponsorship, funding and participating in a NOMAColumbus sponsored charitable activity, hosting a project pipeline design camp, and sending at least 15 members to the national conference. These goals sit above the ground level work of getting members licensed, talking to students and introducing more diverse youth to our field, helping place university students at our firms, connecting with and serving in our community, connecting emerging members with seasoned professionals in mentor/mentee roles, and above all, support and champion members who are taking initiative, and give a space for members to grow and fellowship with like minded professionals to grow our budding tree of minority professionals in Columbus.
-
I plan to stay very involved in the committees regardless of my future roles. I care very much about the direction of the chapter and will always do my best to be available to assist other members in initiatives they bring up. I believe in NOMAColumbus, and I am fully aware of our potential, if we have good leadership, lean in on the right initiatives, and always keep our membership involved, engaged, and eager to do more.

My previous experience, involvement, and impact with NOMAColumbus helped motivate me because I would get the opportunity to continue to collaborate alongside a leadership team dedicated to its members and our community. I am inspired to help lead and champion such a position in NOMAColumbus because I believe in the foundational importance & power of being an example of what NOMA’s mission is aiming to champion. I recognize the value of leadership being inclusive in representation and thought. Therefore, I am humbled and excited to be able to provide my perspective, skillset, and experiences to help the advancement of the chapter.
-
For the past 2 years as a NOMAColumbus board member, I believe I have been able to exemplify the national organization’s foundational mission, while contributing to the goals and future aspirations of the local chapter. Being an active board member allows me to contribute not just my time, but also my experience, perspective, and skillsets to better grow and prepare for today, tomorrow, and the future. An effective board should be built upon a team that truly champions and respects each other, the core mission and progress while honoring what historically got us here. NOMA is an incredible organization that I am proud to be a part of as an African American Woman in architecture. I am compelled to the responsibility and duty to help create safe spaces, educational programming, mentorship, and professional development that is dedicated towards amplifying its members, our community, and their voices.
As the Chair of NOMAColumbus’ Project Pipeline, I was able to build upon a multitude of leadership roles and responsibilities. Which translated into organizing and running a committee and its initiatives for the local chapter. Example chair responsibilities consisted of directing, managing, and budgeting for all its programming and events. I prioritized the committee's objectives, goals, and processes, while creating a fun and collaborative team atmosphere. As chair, it allowed me to continue to understand and champion the fact that everyone brings various perspectives and skillsets to the table, but all contribute towards the overall success of the committee & the NOMAColumbus chapter.
In addition, I have also contributed to other boards and volunteering opportunities in my collegiate & professional career. During graduate school, I was a part of Washington University in St Louis’s GAC (Graduate Architectural Council) board. Prior to that, I was involved with the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP Camp programming (Design Architecture Art and Planning Youth camps). Participating in dozens of programs over the last decades, and traveling the world, has broadened my perspective and ability to connect with others. I also intentionally chose to volunteer in non-design focus events and organizations such as Big Brother Big Sister, Habitat for Humanity, mental health initiatives, food pantries, homeless shelters etc. All of these experiences presented challenges, lessons learned, and moments of growth that overlap and have helped translate into my architectural career and personal life
-
Outside of my previous experience and involvement on the NOMAColumbus board, my willingness to demonstrate respect, strong communication skills and the ability to connect with a diverse group of people is uniquely something I can bring to the board. My efforts towards advocating for our members, creating programming & community engagement that directly serves the NOMA mission-- is and should always be a priority.
-
I foresee NOMAColumbus contributing to the design community through increased representation, educational growth, increased accessibility to resources, and diverse opportunities that help curate, prepare, and respect the current and next generation of design professionals. These efforts are driven by NOMAColumbus understanding and maximizing on how we can expand our resources. There is a rich history of many minorities in our local communities and architecture industry that have been paving the way for decades and we must continue the journey. Acknowledging their journey will help provide a foundation that allows us to appreciate and embrace any opportunity to occupy and design inclusive spaces and environments.
-
As Chair of Project Pipeline, I worked alongside an exciting group of team members full of ideas and perspectives. I was able to hone in on different communication methods and leadership skills to help move everything forward. This required creating and communicating a clear schedule, goals, and milestones for our team. One solution was through several design thinking workshops and committee meetings that created a space for open dialogue. These workshops helped establish clarity on the objective, its needs, and goals. The next step involved developing multiple concepts, its challenges, and solutions to then implement. This process also involved analyzing the areas of improvement and disconnect to ensure an effective and successful outcome. In running these workshops, I had to adapt to change, experiment with new ideas and organize the group & community discussion points, into actionable items.
-
I have and will always be an advocate for how we can engage, elevate, and educate those around us to be more inclusive and equitable. My passions will continue to grow and ideally help develop and improve the design community’s perspective, leadership opportunities, and involvement within underrepresented and marginalized communities.
If elected, I plan to help contribute to the advancement of minorities in licensure and development of leadership roles/skillsets in architecture and adjacent design professions. This involves expanding our presence in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry, mentorship opportunities, and providing helpful licensure resources to those pursuing this pathway. We must understand that this process is not linear for us all and it doesn’t have to be a challenge faced alone. Pursuing licensure and increased leadership roles in firms and organizations involves a collaborative and mentorship effort from local chapters, firms, and the design community.
Secondly, as Vice President and past Chair of Project Pipeline, I hope to continue the expansion of Project Pipeline programming. By NOMAColumbus becoming a resource and platform that provides a safe space and support system for those involved, and/or inquiring, at any stage of their design career—we must continue to help inspire students of all ages. Being able to expand on Project Pipeline initiatives involves further engagement in local school districts, universities, increased involvement in the local community, and of course continuing to provide design camps, activities, and design workshops that all align with the mission of the chapter.
A common misconception is that Project Pipeline is only about its youth design camps-- which is incorrect. Design Summer Camp is an essential part of introducing architecture to our youth and diversifying the pipeline. Being the Chair and director of our very first chapter 2023 Design Summer camp was an honor and exciting moment that set the foundation to build upon. The Project Pipeline initiative provides programming and efforts that expand throughout the entire journey of becoming a design professional. When engaging our emerging professionals, we must continue to increase their access to professional development, mentoring and educational opportunities that help provide safe spaces for minority architects and architecture and design students to thrive in.
-
I look forward to seeing the growth of the chapter, membership, community engagement and Project Pipeline. It was an honor to hold the positions held the past two years and I truly think this chapter has the potential to make waves in an industry that needs diversity in representation and thought. This should be the norm -- as our design choices and decisions have physical, societal, systematic, and cultural implications.

The board has great influence on the success of the chapter by providing a foundation for long-term growth. The general attitude and focus of the Board directly impacts the course of the chapter's efforts. I am motivated to be on the NOMAColumbus board to focus and strengthen the initiatives of the organization from our first year, while understanding the needs of our members & prospective members. I see the engagement of members as our biggest area of focus for the next year.
-
I have been an active member of my local NOMA chapters since college. While living in Connecticut, I led NOMAct's Programs & Outreach Committee for 2 years and served on the Board of Directors for 1 year. Since moving to Columbus, I am an active member of the Budget & Finance committee focusing on sponsorship relations.
-
Through my experience with professional organizations and firm committees, I have a strong vision for long-term sustainable planning. I gained insight when serving on the newly formed NOMAct Board as to what did and didn't work for them in growing their chapter and building a strong foundation. Additionally, I am highly motivated to continue NOMAColumbus' success with a goal of making it seen by the profession and community as an essential organization within Columbus.
-
In response to the Project Pipeline camp, parents noted they saw value in having minority representation. Our mission is validated as a need in the Columbus community for K-12 students. I see our organization contributing to the design community through expanding those project pipeline initiatives through licensure, as well as balancing educational programming for our professional members. I would advocate for our chapter by connecting with local organizations and grant funding sources.
-
In my past experience as leader of my firm's DEI committee, we learned in K-12 programming that not all class schedules allowed for multi-day camps or visits (COVID). We developed an architecture-focused course with local project site and activities that teachers could instruct on their own time. We, as an organization, may not have the man-power to reach every school but if we innovate, we can reach more students.
-
This question comes back to supporting our members - we need to engage more members in architecture, design, and allied professions. If members feel heard, encouraged, and supported by the chapter, thats when the magic happens. I plan to create an internally focused campaign, reconnecting with prospective members.
With more engaged members, we can further our mission of promoting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the community exponentially.

Through my experiences with many organizations, I have had many opportunities to grow and learn. I participated in hackathons, creating pitch decks for funding competitions, making business models, budgets, and coordinating events in the startup business space. From joining an Emerging Leaders Cohort, I facilitated an advocacy event and learned techniques and processes for fundraising. Finally, with my board experience with membership and marketing for Habitat for Humanity Mid-Ohio Young Professionals, I have been able to work closely with events and fundraising to create and coordinate successful fundraising events.
-
I believe NOMAColumbus plays a vital role in making the design profession more accessible and representative of our city. Finding ways to get involved with community development and partnering with design organizations will raise awareness of the design profession. My involvement would include utilizing my connections with local organizations doing great work in the AEC sector and adjacent organizations with any design and community-focused values to partner and help our chapter grow. These partnerships will help us strengthen our connections with communities as a leader in the design space and offer opportunities to promote and showcase minority voices.
-
As one of the leaders in the sustainability sector at my firm, I am excited about the opportunity given to create a baseline for our firm to scale our sustainability services and knowledge base. As we looked to revamp our services earlier this year, I recommended the team be open to all ideas and look for avenues that are not as conventional as a green building certification. Along with idea generation, I suggested the team create a structure for the areas we wanted to pursue to make a strong business case. Throughout this process, I urged our team to become comfortable sharing any ideas and feelings behind them to allow us to open up and ensure everyone has a say. With a small group of five employees, we embraced being transparent and allowing ourselves to share ideas openly on what we want to see at our firm in the future. Since being in this role, we have revamped our services to include consulting and research-based services and seen our team grow in confidence and involvement as professionals.
-
As a board member, I plan to support all initiatives brought by our members, providing feedback and offering my skill set to plan and execute them. Initiatives I want to focus on in 2024 include increasing firm outreach and connecting with other local organizations and Midwest NOMA chapters. Expanding our presence with AEC firms through events such as lunch and learns, happy hours, and membership forums allow us to inform firms about our initiatives and provide a direct ask for AEC professionals to join our chapter. Reaching out and working with local organizations helps create partnerships that spread our reach outside the AEC profession to raise awareness in Columbus and beyond. Connecting to other NOMA chapters will allow us to remain aware of trends within the region and offer opportunities that will benefit our respective chapter members.
-
Thank you for the opportunity. I am excited for what this upcoming year will bring. I am optimistic that NOMAColumbus will continue to grow and find new ways to spread awareness, build our diverse design community, and offer opportunities to develop the next generation of designers.
